Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is a fantasy tabletop role-playing game (RPG) where players embark on imaginary adventures within a fantasy setting. A player assumes the role of a character with unique abilities, strengths, and weaknesses, navigating through stories filled with quests, battles, and intrigue. Here's a brief overview of the game for all you new players out there!
Role-Playing: At its core, D&D is about role-playing. You create a character with a specific race (elves, dwarves, tieflings, humans, etc.) and classes (such as wizards, fighters, rogues, and bards), and you play according to that character's personality and abilities. Your character will grow and develop over time, gaining new skills, abilities and powers. Not to mention the friends you make along the way!
Gameplay: D&D games are typically run by a Dungeon Master (DM), who narrates the game world and its inhabitants, referees the rules, and sets challenges for players. The DM creates or follows a campaign (a series of adventures) and guides players through the story, adjusting based on the players' actions.
Dice: Gameplay involves a set of polyhedral dice, determining the outcomes of battles, skill checks, and other actions. Our campaign tends to avoid rolling dice as much as possible in order to make the game more fun and enjoyable. The most iconic is the 20-sided die (d20), used for attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks.
Collaboration: D&D is inherently collaborative, with players working together to overcome challenges. The focus is on teamwork, problem-solving, and storytelling, rather than winning or losing.
Imagination: One of the most appealing aspects of D&D is the freedom it offers. Players can imagine almost any action for their characters, and the DM will determine the outcome, often with a dice roll. This allows for a limitless range of stories and adventures.
Getting Started: To start playing, you'll need a set of D&D rulebooks (or a friendly DM like Jaye), character sheets to keep track of your character, and a group of friends. All of which can be found for free* by clicking this link after joining our campaign.
D&D is a game of imagination, strategy, and luck, appealing to those who enjoy storytelling, fantasy, and cooperative gaming. Whether battling dragons, exploring ancient ruins, or navigating courtly intrigue, D&D offers an immersive experience that has captivated players for generations.
